ARTIST STATEMENT
So what's with me and chickens? I'm afraid that I'm going to keep hearing this question for the foreseeable future. Factory is a work of continuity in my exploration of humans' consumer relationship with the planet.
Chickens are symbols of consumption. Symbols of exploitation, perversion, hierarchy, depersonalisation, collective passivity. Symbols of the human condition.
Particularly in the context of America, I am interested in how our society treats abundance in spite of the conditions that must be satisfied to bring us to the point of it; our ease of access to chickens through consumption, not through connection raises several questions for me. My work is not intended to be a vocal critique or didactic statement on anything in particular, but instead, questions the imitative quality to the way we interact with whom we consume. The absurdity of my chickens is underlined by an implicit reflection on humans’ tendency to diminish the lives of other beings, despite our own likeness to them.
