Celebrate Japanese art and Earth Day in this meditative drawing workshop inspired by Sumi-e brush paintings of nature.

 

What is Sumi-e?

The Japanese term “Sumi” means “black ink”, “e” means “painting”. Sumi-e is an East Asian writing and painting style that uses a brush and black ink on paper.

For this online workshop, you will create a Sumi inspired landscape drawing using black pens and markers.

 

Supplies needed:

  • Black and red pens
  • Assorted colored pens
  • White drawing paper

More about the Artist:

Yeu Q Nguyen is a multi-disciplinary artist and educator based in Los Angeles. Her art workshops and exhibitions have attracted thousands of live participants across Southern California at notable venues such as the USC Pacific Asia Museum, the Autry’s Southwest Museum, the Audubon Center at Debs Park, and the Orange County Center for Contemporary Art. Q likes to marry the old and the new in her art practice, frequently inspired by her Vietnamese cultural heritage and classical arts as well as her interests in modern technology and contemporary social issues.

 

Born in Vietnam and immigrated to the US as a teenager, her poetry and art was also featured on the cover of the Inlandia Institute’s 2020 literary anthology titled “A Short Guide To Finding Your First Home In The US.” As a community art organizer, she has curated and developed multiple public art programs in the North East LA region, attracting more than 15,000 participants and providing work opportunities to more than 200 artists and independent creatives. In her spare time, Q likes to read, cook, explore the outdoors, and dote on her beloved Bengal cat named Jazz.
