DESCRIPTION:
Charles “Lil Buck” Riley brought international attention to the street dance Memphis jookin’ in 2011 when a video of his spectacular improvised performance with cellist Yo-Yo Ma—who declared Lil Buck a “genius”—went viral on YouTube. Since then, he’s blown audiences away performing with Madonna at the Super Bowl, New York City Ballet, and Cirque du Soleil.
WHAT MOVES YOU is an intimate collaboration between Lil Buck and one of today’s most accomplished young cellists, Ashley Bathgate. In an incredible interactive performance, Lil Buck and Bathgate will reveal the intricacy and immediacy of the creative relationship between movement and music, and challenge the boundaries of what their respective instruments—the body and the cello—can do. They will be joined by a special guest, movement artist and choreographer Jon Boogz. With a score ranging from iconic classical works to the sounds of contemporary composers, they will demonstrate what Lil Buck means when he says, “I see sounds everywhere.”
Artist Bios:
Lil Buck began jookin’ at age thirteen alongside mentors Marico Flake and Daniel Price. Trained in hip hop and ballet, he was named one of Dance Magazine’s “25 to Watch” in 2012, and has collaborated with renowned artists including Janelle Monáe, JR, New York City Ballet, Yo-Yo Ma, and Madonna. Lil Buck served as an artistic ambassador at the US-China Forum on the Arts and Culture, and performed in Cirque du Soleil’s Michael Jackson: One. (Instagram, Twitter, YouTube)
Ashley Bathgate is a rising star who combines “bittersweet lyricism along with ferocious chops” (New York Magazine). A member of the award-winning sextet Bang on a Can All-Stars, Bathgate recently premiered Bach Unwound, with composer collective Sleeping Giant, and released Stories for Ocean Shells, works written for Bathgate by Kate Moore. Jon Boogz is a movement artist, choreographer, and director whose work pushes the boundaries of what dance can be. Boogz embarked as a movement artist fifteen years ago and began dancing in competitions around the world. Since then he has choreographed work for numerous icons including Mikhail Baryshnikov, Naomi Campbell, and Gloria Estefan. His choreography has been featured on FOX’s So You Think You Can Dance and the Cirque du Soleil Michael Jackson ONE show in Las Vegas. Boogz recently collaborated with Buck and artist Alexa Meade on the emotionally charged video "Color of Reality." (Instagram, Twitter, YouTube)
