Our second Vertical Studio Challenge is just around the corner! We're thrilled to announce that this year, we've partnered with CityFabrik, a community-driven nonprofit design studio based in Long Beach, and will be focusing on their Westside Barrier Park project for our competition. 

The Vertical Studio Challenge brings together freshmen through seniors in mixed-year teams to tackle real-world issues presented by our research and community partners. It’s a hands-on opportunity to apply geodesign in ways that directly support both local ecological systems and the communities connected to them.

Requirements:
Groups must include students from at least two different years (e.g., students
in their 2 and 4 years)

Groups must use spatial data and mapping to support analysis and design
decisions
Groups must provide a localized, implementable solution that addresses
sustainability concerns
Groups must submit a proposal through a StoryMap within three weeks
The winning group will have the opportunity to share their proposal directly with
project stakeholders.

off event to learn more about how you can use your spatial perspective to

meaningfully contribute to climate adaptation, environmental health, and public
space equity in a historically underserved community.

Please join us on Tuesday, March 3rd from 12:30 - 1:30 p.m. in AHF 145D for the kick-off event, where CityFabrik will start us off with information about the project and ideas on how we can contribute to their active efforts. We’ll also cover the deadline, key considerations, and leave time to assemble groups. This competition is open to all SSI students interested in leveraging spatial data to help communities like Long Beach resolve land use conflicts for more sustainable development.
