Dr. Berger will discuss epigenetics in regulation of mouse and human memory, and diseases of memory. In mice, Dr. Berger's lab study a pathway within the nucleus of metabolic production of acetyl-CoA, the key cofactor for histone acetylation, by a metabolic enzyme, ACSS2. Dr. Berger's lab finds that ACSS2 is crucial in memory in mouse. Dr. Berger's lab also study epigenetic alterations in human Alzheimer’s disease, where they find that AD is not an accelerated form of normal aging, but rather a distinct disease pathway. Dr. Berger's lab recent findings show that ACSS2 has a critical role in a mouse model of AD, and may thus be a new pathway to ameliorate disease.
