Single-cell RNA-seq studies have been mostly focused on building "cell atlases". While these have been useful, the biological insights that can be derived from them are limited. Performing *experiments* with single-cell RNA-seq technologies is challenging, but potentially much more rewarding. I will discuss some of the computational and experimental tools that we've been developing to facilitate single-cell RNA-seq experiments, and demonstrate their use in an a study of cell-type specific starvation responses of Clytia medusa.
