What can the fruit fly Drosophila teach us about hearing and deafness? In the first part of my talk, I will discuss how studying Drosophila development gave us clues to how the boundaries of the Organ of Corti, the hearing organ of the mammalian ear, are positioned within the cochlea. In the second part of my talk, I describe how screening for genes that affect hearing in Drosophila has shed light on genes that cause deafness in mice and humans.
