Talk Title: Monitoring of Seizure Data to Inform Surveillance of Fentanyl Use in the United States

Description: Fentanyl use has been linked to hundreds of thousands of deaths in the United States in recent years, but we lack national data regarding use and availability. National mortality data has been our main source to indicate the extent of fentanyl use, but other forms of data are needed to help inform prevention and harm reduction efforts. Seizure data can help us monitor fentanyl availability in the population. Dr. Palamar will discuss the efficacy of seizure data as an indicator of fentanyl use or availability, and will present trends in seizures of fentanyl powder and pills through 2022. Dr. Palamar will also present new findings suggesting that fentanyl seizure rates can predict mortality rates.
