As an inaugural University-wide commemoration of the Day of Remembrance on Wednesday, February 19, 2025, the USC Asian Pacific Cinema Association is presenting Defining Courage in the historic Bovard Auditorium on the USC campus. The USC Shinso Ito Center for Japanese Religions and Cultures is proud to support this production, along with the USC Asian Pacific Alumni Association, Professor Susan H. Kamei, and Professor Velina Hasu Houston.

This immersive docu-theatre experience produced and narrated by renowned news anchor David Ono shares the extraordinary stories of the World War II Nisei soldiers, Americans of Japanese ancestry who served in the segregated military units of the 100th Battalion, the 442nd Regimental Combat Team, and the 522nd Field Artillery Battalion that served in Europe, and the Military Intelligence Service that served in the Pacific theatre. Considered the greatest fighting units in American military history, they were heroes who not only fought the enemy abroad, they also fought prejudice in their country that considered them disloyal by virtue of their heritage.

The Day of Remembrance commemorates the date in 1942 when Executive Order 9066 was issued by President Franklin D. Roosevelt, which led to the incarceration of over 125,000 individuals of Japanese ancestry during World War II. Don't miss this unforgettable performance, crafted especially for the USC community, to learn about and honor the remarkable heroism of the Nisei soldiers as well as all those who endured the unjustified incarceration.
