In an era of sharp political polarization, the role of presidential leadership in shaping civic discourse has never been more important. From John F. Kennedy to Ronald Reagan and Bill Clinton to Donald Trump, U.S. presidents have often set the tone for how Americans engage with one another -- sometimes modeling respectful debate and cross-partisan cooperation, other times fueling division. This conversation will explore moments when presidents bridged divides, the limits of civility in politics, and whether presidential behavior truly influences the public’s own standards of civic engagement.

The USC Center for the Political Future and the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation & Institute invite you to a virtual discussion on civility and the presidency. Panelists will reflect on examples ranging from Reagan’s partnership with Tip O’Neill to Obama’s dialogue with critics, considering what lessons they hold for today’s fractured climate. With America’s 250th anniversary approaching, the event will also ask what gives us hope for rebuilding norms of respect, dialogue, and common purpose in our democracy.
