The 1969 oil spill in the Santa Barbara Channel galvanized the modern environmental movement in California and beyond, and left in its wake a clean-up that extended into legislation and civic activism. Teresa Sabol Spezio, visiting assistant professor in Environmental Analysis at Pitzer College, explores the event and the mobilization that it fueled in hernew book Slick Policy: Environmental and Science Policy in the Aftermath of the Santa Barbara Oil Spill. Jointhe Huntington-USC Institute on California and the West as we kick off a suite of programs on the environmental history of the modern American West.
