The USC Visual Studies Research Institute presents The Visual Culture of Microbes. Co-sponsored by the Center on Science, Technology, and Public Life and the Levan Institute for the Humanities

FRÉDÉRIC KECK, Centre Nationale de la Recherche Scientifique

M.G. LORD, Department of English, USC

How can a collaboration between microbiologists and anthropologists be presented to the public through visual techniques at a time when images of pandemic viruses are proliferating?

This event will offer a presentation by Frédéric Keck, Laboratoire d’anthropologie sociale, CNRS Paris of his graphic novel (with graphic artist Pierre-Yves Cézard) L’Ara de Rosa - Les Microbes. Based on the fictitious encounter between Louis Pasteur and Rosa Bonheur in the castle of this woman artist who lived with animals near Fontainebleau, it narrates the investigation of veterinarian Edmond Nocard on the transmission of the bacteria causing psittacosis between parrots and humans. Keck is the 2022–23 Dornsife-EHESS Visiting Professor at USC, in residence starting March 2023 and hosted by the USC Center on Science, Technology, and Public Life

M.G. Lord, former political cartoonist for Newsday, author of Astro Turf: The Private Life of Rocket Science (about JPL), host of the podcast, Blood, Sweat and Rockets, and Associate Professor of the Practice (English, USC), will be in conversation with Keck about science pedagogy and the larger audiences that graphic novels and other media open up.
