The challenge of meeting existing and emerging energy demands around the world with dual goals of economic and environmental sustainability is daunting. To be sure, markets, policy and technology will all be critical in defining our energy future. But, it is important to understand that solutions may be very heterogeneous, with changes occurring at different rates and with differing points of emphasis in various regions around the world.  Understanding this begins with a clear view of the scope and scale of the global energy challenge.
