DESCRIPTION:Please join The Ethnography Studio on March 11th for a conversa
tion with Dr. Paige West on the sustained joys and challenges of working w
ith family. Dr. West will discuss how to work/collaborate/mobilize with pe
ople we love\, considering the challenges and possibilities we face when t
hinking and doing are not severed from pre-existing responsibilities. How
do science and knowledge take shape in this lively juncture? This is an in
-person event and if you would like to join\, please RSVP here before Marc
h 4th. Refreshments will be provided. \n\n \n\nThis event will precede Dr.
West's Anthropology Colloquium talk at noon. \n\n \n\nPaige West is The C
laire Tow Professor of Anthropology at Barnard College and Columbia Univer
sity. Since the late 1990s\, her research and teaching have focused on the
relationships between Indigenous ecological knowledge\, environmental con
 servation\, and socio-political transformation in Oceania\, particularly i
n Papua New Guinea\, where she has conducted over 110 months of field-base
d research since 1997. Dr. West’s scholarship bridges the social and env
ironmental sciences\, exploring themes such as the intersections of conser
vation and development\, Indigenous alternatives to externally imposed env
ironmental agendas\, the symbolic and material engagements with biodiversi
ty\, the commodification of ecological knowledge\, and climate change. Her
current research investigates sea level rise\, managed retreat\, and how c
ommunities adapt and forge futures in the face of climate change.\n\n \n\n
