Independent Aspects of Well-Being
Can we make sense of the idea that there are quantities of individual well-being? One standard approach appeals to tradeoffs made in conditions of risk as a way to give meaning to, or ground, quantities of well-being. In this talk, I argue that tradeoffs between prudential, final objective goods—for example, pleasure, knowledge, friendship—offer a better foundation for a quantitative account of well-being. For my proposal to work, these goods need to be independent of one another, in a certain sense to be made precise. I will defend the view that indeed they are.
