Media effects how we perceive reality. This seminar will explore how cinema can shift awareness and behavior in advancing sustainability. We will examine the current work of Al Gore's Climate Reality Project and contemporary research and examples of the motivational effectiveness of a variety of forms of cinema. This seminar is aimed at awakening participants to ways to change behavior in personal and community actions to deal with the challenges of global warming and show students how media does this, and expose them to media classes they might take, and organizations they can join, to get actively involved. Day 1 will be a keynote presentation with videos, photos, and infographics that reveal the current issues resulting from the climate crisis and show the contemporary worldwide solutions. Participants will engage in discussion of how they are personally affected and what they can do in their own lives to make a difference. Day 2 will also use a keynote presentation exploring the theories and examples of how cinema can change perception and motivate action and focus on media that stimulates sustainability. Anyone interested in the use of media for change and how to actively participate in solutions to global warming on a personal and community level will benefit from this seminar and see how classes offered in the cinema school teach these principles and what USC organizations are devoted to action on campus and in the community. So those students interested in cinema and environmental sciences, political and social work will all benefit from the experience.
