The social psychology brownbag talk series. This week we have Dr. Sheila Murphy presenting her talk: Just a Spoonful of Sugar Helps the Messages Go Down: Exploring the Psychological Mechanisms Underlying Narrative Persuasion
Abstract: Dr. Sheila Murphy and Nathan Walter will present a series of experimental studies demonstrating that narratives or stories can be a valuable tool in changing knowledge, attitudes, and behavior, exploring psychological mechanisms such as identification, transportation, reactance, perceived interactivity, and vicarious self-affirmation that underlie these effects. This line of research offers theoretical and practical implications for changing behavior in contexts where reason and logic prove ineffective.
