As part of the Fall 2021 Signature Series, the USC Thornton Opera, in collaboration with the USC Thornton Symphony, presents two one-act operas, Christoph Willibald Gluck’s Orfeo ed Euridice and Benjamin Britten’s Curlew River, A Parable for Church Performance.

Composed by Christoph Willibald Gluck and set to a libretto by Ranieri di Calzabigi, Orfeo ed Euridice is based on the myth of Orfeo’s love for Euridice, and his attempts to win her back from the underworld. Curlew River, with music by Benjamin Britten and set to a libretto by William Plomer, is the first of Britten's three Parables for Church Performance. It is based on the Japanese Noh play Sumida-gawa.

These contrasting operas, composed 300 years apart and reimagined within the gritty urban landscape of downtown Los Angeles, tell stories of love, loss, suffering and redemption that continue to resonate today.

The USC Thornton Opera’s event will feature in-person attendance for all four events, and livestreams on Thornton/LIVE on Friday, Nov. 19 and Sat., Nov. 20.
