Type 2 diabetes is on rise in children and adults worldwide. Per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a large group of (>4,000) chemicals widely used in manufacture since the ‘40s. Higher exposure to certain long-chain PFAS has been associated with altered glucose and insulin levels in previous epidemiology studies, but the potential impacts of exposure to PFAS as mixtures, and underlying mechanisms are understudied. In this talk, Dr. Valvi will share recent findings about the impact of PFAS on type 2 diabetes risk in multiethnic populations and underlying mechanisms, from prospective investigations with repeated exposure and metabolomics measures across the lifespan.
