ABOUT THE EXHIBITION
Can we challenge the aesthetics of policing while living in a panopticon? Can we see through their physical forms and acknowledge their dangers outside of ourselves? Or do we need signifiers to question these forms? In “Signifier,” Sarai breaks down aesthetics of surveillance to single out the normalcy of the tools of policing. By drawing out these aesthetics, Sarai classifies them as signifiers of dangerous apparatuses. They use color, texture, shapes, and size to alert the senses to the tools of discipline and correction. If we notice these tools of surveillance in our neighborhoods we can quickly identify them elsewhere. These works are meant to aid our understanding and strengthen our instincts to recognize catastrophic patterns.
Masks are highly encouraged.
