DESCRIPTION:Paul Groner and Lori Meeks will lead participants through close
readings of passages from the Chōmonshū\, a collection of teachings att
ributed to the Vinaya revivalist Eison (1201-1290). This collection of sho
rt sermons and anecdotes provides great insight into the social and cultur
al life of Buddhist monasticism in medieval Nara. \n\nBios\nPaul Groner re
ceived his Ph.D. in Buddhist Studies from Yale and spent most of his caree
r at the University of Virginia. His research has focused on the Japanese
Tendai School and the precepts. His interest in ordinations and monastic
discipline have led him to research on Eison and the status of nuns in med
ieval Japan. Among his major works are Saichō: The Establishment of the
Japanese Tendai School and Ryōgen and Mount Hiei: Japanese Tendai in the
Tenth Century. He is also the translator of HIRAKAWA Akira’s The History
  of Indian Buddhism\, vol. 1.\n\nFlyer | RSVP
