Kobabe's debut graphic novel, Gender Queer: A Memoir (2019), from Lion Forge Comics/Oni Press, was a winner of an Alex Award and Stonewall Honor in 2020, and nominated for an Ignatz Award and the Best Graphic Novels for Teens List from YALSA in 2019. The autobiographical graphic novel explores adolescence, coming out, and gender and sexual identity. Gender Queer has come into public consciousness after being the most challenged book in the United States in 2021, according to the American Library Association’s (ALA) Office of Intellectual Freedom. Kobabe’s work focuses on themes of gender, sexuality, queerness, and popular culture. Eir work has been featured in art shows, graphic medicine exhibits, and museums.
