Primary Care in the Inpatient Setting

Objectives:
- List inpatient roles available to primary care doctors and how commonly primary care doctors (e.g. in Family Medicine, general Internal Medicine, general Pediatrics and Med-Peds) work in the inpatient setting managing acute exacerbations of chronic disease and common inpatient conditions.
- Outline common reasons primary care doctors choose to work in the inpatient setting and how PCP involvement may improve outcome (ie continuity of care, complex and co-morbid patient management)
- Compare and contrast the roles, responsibilities, and training of hospitalists versus primary care doctors who work both outpatient and inpatient
- Provide examples of how primary care doctors who work both outpatient and inpatient split their time and integrate inpatient work into their practice
