EASC Guest Speaker Series: Alex Curran-Cardarelli and Brian Bernards
Alex Curran-Cardarelli, is the former festival manager and managing director of the Luang Prabang Film Festival. In 2020, she helped organize the production of Mekong 2030, an omnibus film (93 minutes) of five speculative shorts from directors from the five mainland Southeast Asian countries bordering the Mekong River: “Soul River” (dir. Kulikar Sotho [Cambodia]), “The Che Brother” (dir. Anysay Keola [Laos]), “The Forgotten Voices of the Mekong” (dir. Sai Naw Kham [Myanmar]), “The Line” (dir. Anocha Suwichakornpong [Thailand]), and “The Unseen River” (dir. Pham Ngoc Lan [Vietnam]). From different perspectives (and using vastly different narrative styles), the five shorts imagine the near future of the Mekong River, which serves as the lifeline artery of the region. The films also juxtapose the work of more acclaimed festival directors like Suwichakornpong with up-and-coming filmmakers such as Keola. With three female and two male directors, the films also showcase the region’s ethnic diversity, with Sai Naw Kham coming from Myanmar’s minority Shan people.
