“Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, and life to everything,” according to Plato. Music is also big business. This panel of experts will explore the art, craft, and product from multiple angles, including the relationship between music and mindfulness and how to succeed in the industry.  

  • Jeff Brabec is an adjunct professor at the USC Thornton School of Music and senior vice president of business and legal affairs for BMG Rights Management. Specializing in evaluating, projecting income, and negotiating music publishing catalogue acquisitions in addition to music licensing issues, he is the co-author of the best-selling book Music, Money, and Success: The Insider’s Guide To Making Money in the Music Business (1994).
  • Lynn Helding is Professor of Practice in Voice and Vocal Pedagogy and creator of the voice science curriculum for USC’s Thornton School of Music. She is the author of The Mindful Musician: Teaching, Learning & Performance in the Age of Brain Science (2020) and an associate editor of the Journal of Singing..
  • Richard Wolf is an Emmy Award­–winning composer, multi-Platinum RIAA awarded record producer, and author. He is founder and CEO of the independent production, publishing, and licensing company, The Producers Lab, Inc. His book, In Tune: Music As The Bridge To Mindfulness (2019), is acclaimed as an innovative guide to contemplative practices for musicians.
  • Varun Soni (moderator) is the Vice Provost for Campus Wellness and Crisis Intervention and Dean of Religious Life at USC. In the latter role, Soni brings together the spiritual and scholarly resources of the university, provides moral and ethical leadership for the USC community, and works closely with the 90 student religious groups and the 40 religious directors on campus. He is also the author of Natural Mystics: The Prophetic Lives of Bob Marley and Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan.
