DESCRIPTION:Opening Reception: Feb 16\, 6 - 9pm\nExhibition is on view Feb
 17 - 24\, 2024\nGallery hours: Wed - Sat: 12 - 5pm\n\n \n\nA Diasporic Pur
gatory\n\n \n\nMuna Malik’s work investigates the politics of land\, nat
ionhood\, and belonging\, reflecting on her experiences as a first generat
ion immigrant of Yemeni and Somali heritage. Her work explores the complex
ities of diasporic identity against a backdrop of conflict\, severe drough
t\, increased displacement\, and the broader socio-political landscape of
migration.\n\n \n\nThis body of work brings together masks inspired by myt
h and Afro-Futurism\, sculptures inspired by East African seafaring tradit
ions\, and a video installation that combines archival film footage from S
omalia paired with footage the artist recorded in Kenya last summer. \n\n
\n\nThe exhibition is a multi-media installation that explores symbols of
nationhood\, migration and the poetics of myth-making to examine the conce
pt of a "diasporic purgatory" — a perpetual state of existence character
ized by paradoxes experienced by many within diasporic communities as a fe
eling of being caught between worlds. Malik’s work has been featured at
the Parrish Art Museum\, MOCA Geffen\, The International Center of Photogr
aphy\, and ESMOA\, and in publications such as The New York Times\, LA Tim
es\, and Vogue. \n\n \n\nExhibition supported by Epilogue Inc. Internation
al travel and research supported through a Macomber Travel Grant.
