Remote work rates have stabilized at a level significantly higher than before the COVID-19 pandemic. This increase in remote work has upended people's relationship to commuting and spurred many to move to locations farther from their usual place of work. This seminar frames the shift to longer but less frequent commuting as part of the outward expansion of commute sheds in urban megaregions. Drawing from data on very long commutes, migration, and remote working, the results highlight the balance of environmental impacts associated with an increasing share of the population living far from urban centers.
