(LECTURE TO BE GIVEN IN KOREAN)

Does civil society exist in South Korea? In response to highly publicized expressions of doubt about the viability of the concept of civil society in Korea, this presentation explores the development of mediating groups in Korean history from the 15th century to recent times. Beginning with village and lineage groups in the Joseon era to organizations forming around school, class, and religious identities, as well as various civic and cultural groups in the most recent periods, distinctive patterns can be examined of intermediary groups’ impact on the emergence of modern society. Furthermore, these patterns present a striking contrast to the development of civil society in China and Japan, particularly in the modern era.
(Please note: Presentation will be in Korean.)
