A conference celebrating the works of Federico Garcia Lorca and his presence in the literary and artistic life of our city.
Lorca in LA is a one-day conference celebrating the works of Federico García Lorca, his presence in the literary and artistic life of our city, and the importance of his writing in our present moment in history.
The conference takes place Friday, December 1 at the Parkside International Residence College on the USC Campus, and is sponsored by The USC School of Dramatic Arts, the Department of Spanish and Portuguese, and American Studies and Ethnicity.
The conference will feature presentations, panels, and performances. Noted Chicano scholar of Drama and Comparative Literature, Professor William AnthonyNericcio (SDSU) will give the keynote address "Con la lengua quemada por la lluvia de sal": Federico García Lorca, Patron "Saint" of Los Ángeles. Inaddition to presentations of new scholarship, MFA actors from USC will perform poetry and scenes from Lorca in Spanish and English, and Jonathan Cárdenas Stallings will perform an original suite for small ensemble inspired by the works of Lorca. Capping the event is a full production of Oliver Mayer's YERMA IN THE DESERT (inspired by YERMA) at the Greenway Court Theatre in the Fairfax District, that evening at 8pm.
Conference presenters will consider Lorca in relation to Los Angeles, its layered history, its eclectic topographies its enduring spirit, its contested identity, and its fractured mosaic of global cultures. Lorca in LA considers global dimensions of the poet’s work, including, but not limited to: Global perspectives on sexuality; The Poet and the City in Lorca's writing; Lorca in theater and performance of the hemispheric Americas; Lorca and world literature/literatura universal; Adaptation and Hispanic Classics; Responses to Fascism, then and now.
