The Ruskin Art Club, Los Angeles’s oldest cultural association (founded in 1888) teams with the USC Thornton School of Music’s Felix Quartet and tenor Drake Danztler to present a concert inaugurating the Southern California bicentennial celebrations of the birth of polymath John Ruskin (1819–1900), seminal Victorian art and social critic, artist, and proto-environmentalist.

The event will feature a performance of Mendelssohn’s String Quartet in E-flat Major (op. 12) along with the Los Angeles premiere of British composer Sarah Rodgers’ evocative work for tenor and string quartet based on Ruskin’s fairy tale “King of the Golden River.” Rodgers’ work was written to mark the centennial of Ruskin’s death in the year 2000 and forms the centerpiece of both British and American events in this special “Ruskin year.”

The Felix Quartet features: Yuqi Li and Kevin Tsao on violin; Nao Kubata, viola; and Allan Hon, cello. Tenor Drake Dantzler is associate professor of music at Oakland University in Rochester, Michigan, and, in addition to teaching voice also coordinates the university’s opera program. He has performed Rodgers’s “King of the Golden River” on numerous occasions.

The concert will be held in the music room of the historic Hancock Museum, which won LA Weekly’s “best hidden museum” designation in 2012. The museum consists of four of the rooms of the former Hancock home that was situated at the corner of Vermont and Wilshire and moved to the USC campus in the 1930s. It now forms part of the Allan Hancock Foundation building on the USC campus. For further instructions on where to find the museum, visit www.usc.edu /maps(look for building code: AHF).

The Ruskin birthday concert is free and open to the public. Parking is available at the USC McCarthy Way entrance off of Figueroa Street for $12 per car. However, space is limited. For any questions and to RSVP for this event please contact info@ruskinartclub.com.
