A day-long series of workshops and conversations in honor of Black History Month designed to illustrate how cultural work is being used to engage communities to take action around the issues that impact our daily lives.

  • 3 pm: What is Culture and how do you use it to advance your work? (Light refreshments provided)
    • Featuring talks and activity led by AnnLab Civic Media Fellows
  • 4:15 pm: Experimentations On Online to Offline Organizing
    • Creative Director of Militia Design and former Director of Communications for Dream Defenders Steve Pargett shares his work over the past 8 years spanning film, photography, design and more.
  • 5:30 pm: Strategic Communications in the Movement for Black Lives
    • Shanelle Matthews of RadComms walks through the media and organizing strategy for the Movement for Black lives.
  • 6:30 pm: The Illustration of the Black Power Movement (Dinner provided)
    • During this dinner reception, Emory Douglas, former Minister of Culture for the Black Panthers, will talk through some of his most influential art pieces and their connection with the organizing strategies during the Black Power movement. 
  • 7:30 pm: Closing Keynote: Art & Culture as a Strategy for Political Action
    • Emory Douglas, Black Lives Matter Co-Founder Patrisse Cullors, and former BYP100 Minister of Culture Fresco Steez discuss the history behind their strategies and how to use arts and culture as a powerful tool to organize the next generation of freedom fighters.
