Talk title: Seeing Stigma, Shaping Solutions: Using PhotoVoice in HIV and Overdose Prevention Research
Talk description: Dr. Walters will examine PhotoVoice as a rigorous participatory research method for analyzing and addressing intersectional stigma within the context of HIV prevention and overdose harm reduction. She will present empirical findings on how stigma differentially shapes access to PrEP, overdose prevention services, and harm reduction programs among people who use drugs. This presentation will illustrate how PhotoVoice enables participants to document and narrate their lived experiences, offering nuanced insights into healthcare barriers and structural inequities. Additionally, Dr. Walters will discuss how PhotoVoice-informed data can inform policy development, enhance service delivery, and contribute to structural interventions aimed at mitigating stigma. By centering community-driven visual methodologies, this talk underscores the necessity of integrating participatory approaches into public health research to advance more equitable and effective interventions.
