DESCRIPTION:Concerns that an increasingly overpopulated and hungry world wo
uld lead to uprisings and social chaos echoed both in 1960s popular press
and official policy briefings. Hunger\, explained as national security thr
eat and social destabilizer\, had the power\, experts argued\, to tilt a p
recariously balanced Cold War globe. This talk examines how Latin America\
, specifically Mexico\, became the essential cog in solutions to end globa
l hunger. Despite this\, in narratives of the Green Revolution Mexico has
held a passive role. By centering the story on Latin America this talk pus
hes us to question known narratives and examine why historical erasures ha
ppen. Additionally\, by turning back to the region this talk will show how
solutions crafted for export left their mark on Latin America's land\, wa
ter\, and communities that ultimately did not benefit from them.
