At Biden's inauguration, Amanda Gorman read "The Hill We Climb." But this tradition of democratic poetry is not new. After de Tocqueville wrote Democracy in America, Emerson responded, calling for a "uniquely American voice" in poetry. This discussion explores that lineage of poets advocating justice, transcending race, nationality, or creed.
