DESCRIPTION:The Bauhaus (1919–1933) is widely regarded as the\ntwentieth 
 century’s most influential art\, architecture\, and\ndesign school\, cel
 ebrated as the archetypal movement of\nrational modernism and famous for b
 ringing functional and\nelegant design to the masses. In this talk\, art h
 istorian\nElizabeth Otto delves into the previously unexplored\nquestion o
 f sexuality and gender fluidity at the Bauhaus. She\nfocuses on the school
 ’s female members and Bauhäusler who\nqueered the school’s aesthetics
  in order to disrupt gender\nconventions\, represent gay and lesbian subje
 ctivities\, and\npicture same-sex desire—moves that were not without ris
 k\nduring the Weimar Republic\, a regime that criminalized\nhomosexuality.
  And\, while the Bauhaus is often cast as\nneutral and apolitical\, Otto e
 xamines its members’ embrace\nof radical politics on both the left and t
 he right—during the\nschool’s Communist period\, when some of the Bauh
 äusler\nput their skills to work for the revolution\, and\, later into th
 e\nservice of the Nazis. This talk disrupts the narrative of a\nnormative 
 Bauhaus to yield a richer history that only\nemerges when we look at a new
  range of Bauhaus works and\nartists\, and reconsider the questions that w
 e ask of them.
