Abstract: The talk is dedicated to operator semigroups that are not continuous with respect to the strong operator topology. The first part of the talk contains a general overview of operator semigroups and applications. The second part covers semigroups of contractions on Hilbert spaces. In particular, it will be proven that such semigroups are strongly continuous on certain subspaces and
behave trivially on the corresponding orthogonal complements. The last part of the talk is devoted to examples that demonstrate such decomposition.
