Still Life with Book and Purse by Gerrit Dou had a somewhat murky and fascinating history. Still life, Nazis, looting, oh my!
Join the USC Fisher Museum of Art and the Art History Department for a day of Dou! A part of the Fisher's permanent collection, Still Life with Book and Purse will be on view from 10 am to 5 pm.
This small but powerful 17th-century work by Dutch master Dou was recently noted in a New York Times article about a trove of artworks looted by the Nazis, re-looted by Germans at the end of the war, and then dispersed in various ways throughout the world in the second half of the 20th century.
A lively program at 10:30 am will discuss the legacy of Dou within the Dutch Golden Age, the rise of still life painting, and the history of Nazi looting. Speakers will include Paul Lerner, Amy Powell, and Hector Reyes.
Coffee and pastries at 10 am in the Fisher Museum courtyard.
