The right-wing populist party Alternative for Germany (AfD) has become a major force in German politics — especially in the East. Dorothee Wierling looks beyond the present moment to uncover the deeper historical roots of its appeal. She traces today’s discontent to long-standing experiences of defeat, division, and perceived marginalization that have shaped East German political culture since 1945.
