The Lakshmi Vrata Katha is recited in contemporary rituals of worship in Odisha, India. This prayer to Lakshmi was written in the sixteenth century by the Bhakti poet Balaram Das. This talk will highlight Lakshmi worship and women’s agency in practice in rural rice-growing areas of India and Southeast Asia. This talk will be presented by Dr. Bidyut Mohanty, Chair, Women’s Studies Unit, Institute of Social Sciences (ISS), New Delhi, India. Visiting Fellow in the Department of Global and International Studies, University of California Santa Barbara (UCSB).
