 \n\n \n\nOrganized by the USC Dornsife Center for Advanced Genocide Resear
 ch\n\n \n\nThe saying goes that ‘we are what we eat’. As such\, the hi
 story of what we eat – and how we eat – touches on the basic fundament
 als of the human condition. What does this look like in a period of intens
 e food scarcity\, persecution\, and mass migration? In her research\, Juli
 e Fitzpatrick examines these questions in the context of the Holocaust.\n\
 n \n\nIn this lecture\, she will discuss middle-class German Jewish women
 ’s experience of food in emigratory landscapes: the choices women made w
 hen planning to move their home overseas\, their experience of domestic se
 rvice and housewifery\, their navigation of food novelties\, and the influ
 ence of food and its cultures in rebuilding life in the wartime and immedi
 ate postwar years. The move abroad exposed many to financial hardships\, s
 maller apartments with inadequate kitchens\, and acute lifestyle challenge
 s. Ms. Fitzpatrick will analyze German Jewish women’s relationship to th
 eir middle-class identity and how issues of class complicated their experi
 ences of prewar migration\, as evidenced by their interactions with food.\

 t at Royal Holloway\, University of London specializing in the interface b
 etween Holocaust Studies\, gender\, and the transdisciplinary approach of 
 food history. She was awarded the Breslauer\, Rutman\, and Anderson Resear
 ch Fellowship for the 2023-2024 academic year. In her dissertation\, entit
 led “‘Light the Candles and Lay the Table’: A Study on German Jewish
  Women’s Relationship with Food During the Prewar\, Wartime and Postwar 
 Eras\,” she investigates food’s intersection with a number of these th
 emes. She is interested in food cultures in diasporic communities\, the cu
 ltural history of German Jews\, the relationship between food cultures and
  class\, gender and domestic lives and socio-cultural anthropology’s con
