Scrapbooks and Army Surplus: C. Tyler's You'll Never Know
Monday, February 5
Henry Jenkins, Provost Professor of Communication, Journalism, Cinematic Art and Education, USC
Throughout this talk, Henry Jenkins will discuss C. Tyler’s graphic novel, which captures her father’s memories as a WWII veteran, as a project in what Annette Kuhn has called “memory work,” a process of analysis by which conflicted family relationships and painful memories are recovered through close engagement with old photographs and artifacts. In particular, he examines scrapbooking and comics-making as part of a larger tradition of women’s creative expression within the domestic sphere. This talk draws on a chapter from Jenkins’s recently completed book, Comics and Stuff. His other books include Textual Poachers: Television Fans and Participatory Culture, Convergence Culture: Where Old and New Media Collide, and By Any Media Necessary: The New Youth Activism.
