Symposium
Co-organized by Suzanne Hudson, Associate Professor, University of Southern California and Jenni Sorkin, Associate Professor, University of California, Santa Barbara, this one-day symposium will address and amplify the set of issues related to diversity and difference, and in particular, address histories of overlooked regionalism. This includes a particular focus on the West, Midwest, South, and Southwest United States: all are represented within the scope of the exhibition, but remain unaddressed in the exhibition catalog, which is heavily slanted toward modernisms within New York City. Among other subjects, topics include African American art within Alabama, the WPA and Hispano tradition in New Mexico, Latinx art in Los Angeles, AfriCOBRA and Imagist histories in Chicago, and Native American Pop Art. Such a rich roster promises to highlight and enrich the existing, and scant, body of literature on folk, outsider, and untrained artistic practices.
Co-sponsored by Terra Foundation for American Art, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and USC Roski School of Art and Design
