About this Event
Jessica Balguy is a Postdoctoral Scholar at the Center for Black European Studies and the Atlantic (CBESA) at Carnegie Mellon University. Her research focuses on the compensation of slave owners after abolition in the French colonial empire in 1848. Her book "Indemniser l'esclavage en 1848 ? Débats dans l'empire colonial français du XIXe siècle" and the public database "Esclavage et indemnités, empire colonial français du XIXe siècle" document the debates that led to this historic decision and the compensation payments. Dr. Balguy will discuss her paper “Indemniser l’esclavage en 1848? L’heure des comptes pour les propriétaires de couleur de la Martinique” with the Age of Revolutions Seminar.
The seminar is co-sponsored by the University of Southern California's USC-Huntington Early Modern Studies Institute and the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales. To participate and receive the pre-circulated papers, please complete the registration form.
