“The Musicology of Gullah Geechee Culture”

South Carolina performer and scholar Ron Daise will offer a historical study of Gullah Geechee culture and heritage through the following musical elements: Pitch – the origin of spirituals, work songs, and shanties; Rhythm – Gullah Geechee language and African Diasporic linguistic connections; Tempo – generational acceptance and understanding; and Texture – beliefs, values, and traditions.

Presented in collaboration with Early Music America.

Ron will also visit classes for Rotem and Scott, with support from EMSI.
