The USC-Huntington Early Modern Studies Institute European History seminar will meet with Alana Mailes (USC Society of Fellows) at the Huntington Library on Friday, September 13. Alana Mailes is a musicologist, cultural historian, and classical singer, with a PhD in Historical Musicology from Harvard University. She will discuss "Secrecy, Sociality, and Diplomacy in Early Modern Chamber Music" with the European History seminar. This talk will illuminate the significance of chamber music as a site of international relations in early modern courtly circles. Music making in embassies and royal courts was a highly social practice that encouraged international dialogue, forged internal bonds within diplomatic communities, and placed professional musicians in opportune positions to acquire intelligence for foreign governments. Given the vogue for Italian music in Stuart England, musicking as political praxis was especially critical to British relations with Italian states.

RSVP by September 6. All EMSI events are free and open to the public.

This program is open to all eligible individuals. USC operates all of its programs and activities consistent with the university’s Notice of Non-Discrimination. Eligibility is not determined based on race, sex, ethnicity, sexual orientation or any other prohibited factor.
