DPPHS Klausner Research Group presents a seminar with Andrew Medina-Marino, PhD on "Improving Access to HIV Prevention and TB Treatment Services in South Africa".

Dr. Medina-Marino is a Senior Investigator at the Desmond Tutu Health Foundation (DTHF), and co-Leads the DTHF Division of Men’s Health in Cape Town, South Africa. He is an Honorary Associate Professor in the Department of Medicine, University of Cape Town, an Adjunct Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry in the Perelman School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania, and the South African PI for the University of California Global Health Institute’s Fogarty Fellowship program.

Dr. Medina-Marino’s research focuses on TB, HIV and STIs in South Africa. With regards to TB, his research focuses on TB and men’s health, community-based active case finding and TB related stigma and the intersection of TB and mental health. With regards to HIV, his research focuses on improving access and adherence to PrEP among young women and HIV testing, care and treatment among men. With regards to STIs, his research focuses on evaluating diagnostics algorithms to optimally decrease STIs among pregnant women to improve birth outcomes. He is funded by the U.S. National Institutes of Health, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and FIND.

Prior to moving to South Africa, Dr. Medina-Marino was an Epidemic Intelligence Service Officer for U.S. CDC. As an outbreak investigation specialist, he was twice deployed to Liberia during the 2014-2016 Ebola outbreak to work with Médecins Sans Frontières. While there, he led disease surveillance, case investigation and contact tracing activities in affected communities.

Dr. Medina-Marino received his PhD from the California Institute of Technology, where he was a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Pre-Doctoral Fellow. He received his bachelor’s degree from Swarthmore College.
