Darol Olu Kae is a filmmaker from and based in Los Angeles. Kae’s artistic practice disrupts conventional narrative structures of storytelling through its dynamic treatment of sound and image. His highly collaborative, research-based approach to filmmaking grounds itself in the nuance of black expressive modalities in America and challenges the medium to render the full complexity of black being visible in cinematic terms.
Keeping Time is a meditation on what it means to maintain continuity with the past — told through the kaleidoscopic journey of a young drummer who must learn how to guide a multi-generational band into the future after being named their new bandleader.
Special thanks to the USC Dornsife Black Studies Initiative, the USC Dornsife Thematic Option Honors Program, and the Department of American Studies and Ethnicity for their generous support of this event.
