Free speech is a bedrock on which our society was built. The right to express one’s thoughts freely helps build knowledge, foster understanding, and accelerate social progress.

But where do we draw the line? How can we avoid misunderstanding and provide clarity on what speech is a protected right? What role does a university and its community play in free speech?

With these questions in mind, USC recognizes the need for ongoing dialogue around our value of Open Communication and how it relates to free speech and academic freedom. We invite all members of the USC community (faculty, staff, and students) to join us to learn more at two upcoming virtual events on February 14th and 28th, both at 1 PM (PST).

The first event on February 14 will be an overview of several important topics connected to free speech and academic freedom. Please register for the first event here. Then, we encourage you to also register for the second event on February 28 which will be a moderated panel to provide further insight and an opportunity to ask questions related to the topic. We hope you can join us on Zoom for both events, but you may attend just one if that’s what your schedule allows.

Please register for the February 14 Overview event on Free Speech here.
