The USC-Huntington Early Modern Studies Institute History of Enslavement Seminar will host a meeting with Mary Hicks, Associate Professor, University of Chicago, on Friday, April 24, 2026.

Mary Hicks is a historian of the Black Atlantic, with a focus on transnational histories of race, slavery, capitalism, migration and the making of the early modern world.  She will present her paper, ""Gifts or Pecas: African Women and the Commercialization of the Portuguese-Atlantic Slave Trade in the 15th and 16th Centuries."
