Celebrate release of the book The Artist’s Materials: Cai Guo-Qiang and the closing of the exhibition Cai Guo-Qiang: A Material Odissey with an exclusive conversation and book signing with the artist and the author!

Cai Guo-Qiang and Rachel Rivenc, Head of Conservation at the Getty Research Institute, discuss her book Cai Guo-Qiang: The Artist’s Materials, an intimate look at the creative process of an artist known for his innovative and insurgent work. The first living artist to be featured in the Getty Conservation Institute's The Artist’s Materials series, Cai Guo-Qiang is among the most prominent artists active today, known for his subversive use of materials especially gunpowder. His prolific, diverse artistic practice—which includes gunpowder drawings and paintings, explosion events, videos, multimedia installations, and site-specific works—draws on a personal belief system that freely blends symbols and tenets from Eastern and Western cultures.

The conversation will be followed by a book signing. Get your book signed by the author and the artist! Guests are also welcome to enjoy an intimate and special reception following the book signing.
